Abstract
Abstract
This research aims to describe the current state of palliative care volunteering in Uruguay, integrating the perspectives of healthcare institutions and individual volunteers in the field. A quantitative approach was used, combining a bibliographic review, institutional mapping, and the implementation of digital surveys targeting volunteers and organizations involved in palliative care.
The results allowed for the characterization of the sociodemographic, motivational, and experiential profile of surveyed palliative care volunteers, predominantly adult women with tertiary education, driven by a desire to help and meaningful personal experiences. Among respondents, voluntary participation tends to be sustained over time, with trajectories exceeding three years and partial dedication, mainly within public hospitals.
The tasks performed focus on emotional support and recreational activities. From the perspective of the surveyed institutions, there is a low level of formal implementation of palliative care volunteering, with limited systematization and uneven territorial distribution. Although few institutions reported having volunteers in palliative care, there is a high appreciation of the volunteer role and a significant willingness to participate in the creation of a national palliative care volunteer network. When analyzing the data globally, findings align with other authors who emphasize that volunteering in palliative care represents an essential dimension of humanized support. However, structural, educational, and emotional conditions are required to ensure its
sustainability and recognition. This thesis seeks to contribute to research that deepens the understanding of the role of palliative care volunteers in Uruguay.
