Abstract
Abstract
Empathy is known as the act by which we access the mind of others. Its study has become relevant at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century to understand the intersubjective dimension of man and to explain human behavior. In opposition to genetic theories of empathy, which propose a naturalistic explanation of human nature, phenomenologists respond with the need for an essential study of the act of empathy. With this, they seek to provide the foundations of a transcendent description of man and the basis for an objective access to the world through rational exchange. In this context Edith Stein, one of Husserl’s early students, writes On the problem of empathy, the epistemological and anthropological implications of which are analyzed in this work. In the first place, Stein points out the essence and peculiarity of the act of empathy, which will turn out to be originary in the experience and not originary in its content, occurring through presentification. The clarity achieved in her work allows to correct the errors in Theodor Lipps’ and Max Scheler’s conceptions of empathy. Stein’s concept of empathy enables the constitution of the spiritual person, which will be the second central theme of this work. It will conclude with an idea of man that highlights corporality and psychophysical causality, as well as the world of values (with affective intentionality) and motivation. In this last part we achieve a structure of meaning that provides a scheme of implication for the constitution of the person. Under this conception, the person transcends himself to the community through intersubjective life.
